This might be a story you have to see to believe as it shows the unconditional love that animals can show to other species of animals. While people were out celebrating the 4th of July weekend, a small black Chihuahua was abandoned outside the Terrell Animal Shelter that was closed for the holiday. The dog was not alone, though. She was nursing two very tiny kittens. The three animals were rescued by police officer, Steve Johns with the Terrell Police Department.
According to Yahoo News, the mother pup was tied to a pole next to a cardboard box. The Dallas TX police officer told his story to the local CBS news station. He took the three animals out of the heat and gave them food and water. The officer shared that he was very shocked to find out that the mother dog was not nursing puppies, but kittens instead.
The animals are now doing well in foster care with foster mom Deborah Franklin with Paws Patrol. This organization rescues approximately 300 to 400 animals every year, according to CBS. The president of the organization stated that the animals are doing great. The mother dog will stay with the kittens until they are weaned, but as for now, the Chihuahua is caring for her kitten babies by cleaning them, responding to their cries and nursing them.
